

What was I supposed to do with the information that the sky I looked at every day was full of objects that behaved according to laws of physics much larger than my own? My toys didn’t have their own gravitational fields. He told me that if it were possible for us to shoot a gun in space the bullet would go on forever and ever, provided it didn’t collide with anything. He shined a flashlight at the smaller ball (Earth) and spun it so the light cast shadows. I sat in awe as he rotated the smaller ball around the exercise ball and explained what it meant for the Earth to orbit the Sun and why that mattered for us. He was going to teach me about the solar system. He tossed aside toys and books until he found an exercise ball. I was sitting on my bed and my dad was digging through my bedroom closet. I have this very striking memory in my mind from when I was a kid.
